Lawmakers Propose “Magic Johnson Way” in East Lansing
Lansing is looking to highlight and celebrate one of its biggest sports icons, and it could be happening sooner than you think.
A Bill to Honor a Lansing Legend
In a move to celebrate the Lansing great, Magic Johnson, Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, and Sen. Michael Webber put forward a brand-new bill to rename a stretch of Grand River Avenue in downtown East Lansing to honor Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

The proposal, House Bill 4945, asks that a segment of Grand River Avenue between Harrison Road and Hagadorn Road become “Magic Johnson Way,” as a tribute to the Michigan State University icon while also touching back on his roots at Lansing Everett High School.
Why “Magic Johnson Way” Matters
Schmaltz, who has kept an eye on local history for years, says that renaming this stretch of road is more than a gesture. It’s a reminder of what Magic brought to the community, not just his talent in basketball, but the inspiration he still gives to the people of East Lansing.

The goal of naming the street after him, on one of the most traveled thoroughfares, is to keep his story front and center for anyone on campus or traveling through East Lansing.
What Happens If the Bill Passes
Many speak from the heart when talking about Magic’s impact on the Spartans’ program over the years. It helps keep alive the name of someone who meant so much to the East Lansing community and who is still making dreams possible for many aspiring Spartans.
If the legislation does pass, “Magic Johnson Way” would be more than a street name—it would be a permanent reminder of Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
