Michigan is one of at least 12 states to be recently targeted by a possible cyber attack.

According to ABC News, these possible cyber intrusions are targeting water and wastewater utilities in those states. Sources say these attacks "can blind utility operators by changing passwords or disabling alarms". And while officials believe Iran may be responsible, although its involvement has not been confirmed.
Thankfully, there haven't been any major disruptions to water supplies or treatment. Despite that, the FBI has made some safety recommendations.
What the FBI Is Telling Water Utilities to Do
First, utilities should disconnect internet-connected operational systems wherever possible. And in the case that the automated systems become compromised, workers should switch to manual operations using system breakers when necessary.

While no major disruptions have been reported, Michigan is on full alert. Michigan State Police is working in partnership with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to reach out to affected facilities within the Mitten State to make sure they secure their systems and follow the cybersecurity guidance.
How Michigan Is Responding to the Threat
Michigan State Police and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy are continuing to monitor the situation for Michigan, but police say that the FBI is leading the investigation and to direct any questions to them.
