Which Michigan Counties Have the Most Native-Born Residents?
I'm a born and raised Michigander, through and through. And barring anything life changing, I have a feeling that I'm going to live in Michigan my whole life.
But, that may not be the case for every Michigander.
Where Are Michiganders Really From?
Maybe you weren't born and raised here, but, at some point you made your way to the Mitten State.
Perhaps it was your love of Michigan's lakes, bountiful fruits, ever-changing seasons, and gorgeous landscapes that made it an irresistible choice? Or, maybe something like school, a job, or love drew you to the Mitten state.

Whatever the reason why, the bottom line is that sometime Michiganders aren't always native to Michigan.

Ok_Chef_8775 shared this unique map on Reddit that gives a county-by-county break down of the percentage of people born in Michigan. The map was put together by Griffin Thompson @whats_mappening using census data.
What the Map Shows About Michiganders
Before diving into the map, I would have figured that a very high percentage of Upper Peninsula residents were native Michiganders. However, I was surprised to see those numbers were much lower than I might have guessed. Here are some key takeaways of the map:
- On average, the counties near the borders (both UP and southern LP) have a much lower percentage of native Michiganders
- The counties with the highest percentage of native born Michiganders are around Saginaw Bay
- The county with the lowest percentage of native-born Michiganders is Cass county, along the Indiana border
- The county with the highest percentage of native-born Michiganders is Tuscola along Saginaw Bay
