
America’s Worst States for Power Outages: Michigan Firmly in Top 10
There are two kinds of Michigan residents when the power goes out: the ones using their phone lights to search for candles (and the elusive lighter), and those who casually stroll out and fire up their generators like they've been training for it for decades.

That second group? They're responsible for a condition known simply as generator envy, most commonly found next door to someone who has working lights, cold food, and a working sump pump while the rest of the block is in the dark and knee-deep.
Michigan is a Standout State For Blackouts
According to a 20-year analysis from Payless Power, using U.S. Department of Energy outage data from 2002 to 2022, some states should include power outages in their tourism brochures.

Florida leads in total people impacted. California tops the list for total outage events. Texas keeps linemen busy with extreme weather.
Michigan Makes the List… But How High?
And Michigan? We're in the Top 10. Not shocking, honestly. Between ice storms that turn the entire state into a skating rink, thunderstorms that pop up out of nowhere, and winds that could give even classic Aqua Net a run for its money, Michigan has built a pretty solid 'lights out' resume.
