The Mitten State doesn't just have trails... we hoard them like a junk drawer of old phone charger cords and unmatched Tupperware lids. But every now and then, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) taps a few on the shoulder and says, "Yep, these are worthy of a Pure Michigan designation."

We're talking paddle routes, bird migration paths, wetlands, and enough scenic views to stress out your phone storage. It's basically Michigan showing off.

If a clear beginning and end is more your glass of Vernors, the Michigan Air Line Trail is a 7.5-mile trail that runs through Wixom, Walled Lake, and Commerce Township, connecting to a much bigger state route.

Fun fact: "Air Line" doesn't mean planes. It means the route is so straight it's what a bird would pick. Bonus points for being one of the few stretches you can travel in Michigan without zig-zagging around orange barrels.

White Pine Trail: The Long Haul

At 92 miles, the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park is for the overachiever of your text chat. It stretches from Grand Rapids to Cadillac, with 15 communities along the way. Paved, scenic, and loaded with history, it's got everything: river views, wildlife, picnic spots, and just enough leg burn to remind you you're alive.

According to a DNR newsletter, each of these trails received a Pure Michigan designation, an annual tradition that highlights the state's top trails. So grab your shoes, your bike, or your kayak. Michigan summer isn't going to experience itself.
