Paying rent in Michigan right now has to feel like a game show where the grand prize is... not crying when you open your lease renewal. But according to a new study from the financial gurus at WalletHub, some cities are still playing on "easy mode"... while others are set to "expert."

The study didn't look at rent prices; instead, it looked at how much of your paycheck rent eats up by comparing median household rent to the area's median household income in America's 150 largest cities, as well as the two largest metros in each state. So which Michigan cities made the list, and how do they rank compared to the rest of the country? Let's dig in.

Most Affordable City for Rent in Michigan

According to WalletHub's analysis, Grand Rapids is the most affordable city for renters in Michigan. Not because it's dirt cheap (far from it)... but because the rent-to-income ratio is more manageable than in other Michigan cities.

That's the whole game here: not "cheap rent," but "rent that doesn't require a second job and a side hustle selling old VHS tapes.

Least Affordable City for Rent in Michigan

This one looks affordable at first glance. The rent numbers don't scream "Run." In fact, they whisper, "This isn't too bad..." And then your paycheck shows up and immediately files a missing persons report. Detroit. WalletHub ranks it near the very bottom nationally for rent affordability (182 out of 183, with Miami taking the 'Nation's Worst City For Rent' title).

The Motor City's rent isn't sky-high... but when you look at the area's median income, it eats a massive chunk of what Detroit natives actually make. So yeah, "cheap rent" doesn't hit the same when it's taking a third of your income like it's entitled to it.

This ranking comes from Consumer Reports, which basically filled up the same grocery cart at stores across the country, mixing name brands and store brands, then compared how each total stacked up against Walmart’s prices.
