An Old General Store Sits Decaying in the Ghost Town of Mashek, Michigan
Mashek is a small community (a/k/a Ghost Town) in Marquette County, within Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
This place is located on the stretch of 426 going through the center of the UP, where there are a good number of ghost towns: ones with old buildings and some with no buildings left at all.
Information on this place is extremely scarce, and some info seems to be just guesswork, but I’ll do the best I can. While there is no exact date of origin, we know Mashek was around at least by 1911. It was probably around before then, possibly a couple of decades earlier, at least, and was part of the mining/lumber industry.

A ramshackle structure sits alone by the road, looking as if it was a general store once upon a time. It is the coolest thing you’ll see in Mashek.
The hamlet was named after George Mashek, owner of the Mashek Chemical & Iron Company in Escanaba. Evidently, but not proven, George also ran the old general store.
There are no stores or open businesses in Mashek and hardly any homes, but there's a huge school. That brings a question to mind: Where are the students coming from? It’s a good-sized school, so where are all the kids being bussed from? Other ghost towns?
Doesn’t matter. Mashek really makes for an interesting, quick stop during your roadtrip for a few photos.
