Cancer in Michigan! What Counties Have the Highest Rates?
There is nothing good about being diagnosed with the C word, Cancer. It sucks, no way around it.
Breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, skin cancer, melanoma, I could go on.
We are blessed here is West Michigan to have wonderful doctors and nurses in our cancer treatment centers, but when you, a love one or friend get "the word," your life takes on an entirely new meaning.
That said, it is interesting to find that there are certain areas, counties in Michigan, that seem to have an abnormally higher rate of cancer than others.

Stacker.com compiled a list of counties all over the U.S. using data from the CDC, where cancer is most common, including Michigan. It is a bit surprising.
The Top 10 Michigan Counties with highest cancer rates:
#1. Roscommon County
#2 Alcona County
#3. Montmorency County
#4. Lake County
#5. Ogemaw County
#6. Leelanau County
#7. Gladwin County
#8. Oscoda County
#9. Ontonagon County
#10. Iosco County
Stacker.com said that there are so many factors contributing to cancer rates:
"from personal habits and genetics to air pollution or groundwater quality in a given area. People experiencing social, economic, or environmental disadvantages are disproportionately affected by high cancer rates in certain regions—including access or barriers to early screening and care."
With that said you would have thought that possibly the largest metro areas in Michigan, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, would have the highest rates of cancer, but you would be wrong. As a matter of fact, Kent, Ottawa and West Michigan counties didn't even make that top 50, and that's a good thing.
