Michigan is the Great Lakes state, and with all these lakes, comes a lot of boaters. At a recent refueling, a boat drove away and exploded moments after leaving the dock.
Michiganders love their boats and getting on the water but sometimes that comes at a cost. Each year there are several boating accidents, many that are alcohol related, while some are just plain accidents.
Boating in Michigan
When it comes to boating in Michigan, there are a lot of great options from the Great Lakes, to hundreds of inland lakes, and rivers to choose from. I see a boat on a trailer almost every day all year long. Many in the colder months are fishermen, but just because there is ice on the lakes, doesn't mean there are not some boats headed to the rivers to fish.
There are row boats, fishing boats, pontoon boats, sail boats, yachts, all the way to cruise lines. With this much boating activity, it’s no surprise that accidents occasionally occur.

Boat Explodes: Dog Killed, Couple Survives Blast
According to Local 4 WDIV, a couple stopped at the Emerald City Harbor in St. Clair Shores over the weekend to gas up their boat at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 6. Things were business as usual at the gas station dock, but when the boat pulled away and began to slowly take off, it exploded.

The couple on the boat were blown into the water with minor injuries but their dog died later at a veterinary hospital from its injuries. The people working the gas station went immediately into action to help the couple out of the water and alert emergency crews.
The cause of the explosion is still being investigated but no foul play or alcohol is suspected in the accident.
